About Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino Natural Park

Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino Natural Park

Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino Natural Park, established in 1967, is located in the Trentino region of northeastern Italy. This protected area covers a portion of the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and spans approximately 19,000 hectares. The park is characterized by its rugged mountain peaks, including the Pale di San Martino group, expansive spruce forests famously known as the "Forest of Violins," and pristine alpine meadows. Among its rich flora are rare orchids and endemic Alpine plants, while wildlife includes red deer, roe deer, chamois, marmots, foxes, and golden eagles. The park plays an important role in conserving traditional forestry and pastoral culture, alongside maintaining biodiversity. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore over 250 kilometers of marked trails that pass through valleys, forested areas, and rocky ridges. The area is also renowned for winter sports such as cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Key landmarks include the Paneveggio Forest area, known for its resonant spruce trees used historically in violin making, and the imposing Pale di San Martino mountain massif with its dramatic cliffs and vertical rock faces, popular among climbers. Visitors can enjoy well-maintained refuges and huts offering mountain hospitality. The park’s natural beauty, combined with cultural history and extensive outdoor access, attracts hikers, nature lovers, and mountaineers throughout the year.
